The common ways of HIV transmission is through sex, blood and used needles. We are all familiar with these ways, but unfortunately they are not the only one. There are some bizarre cases of HIV transmission which will make you wonder are we well protected or not from this deadly disease. Namely, a lady from Brazil got infected with HIV after she visited a nail salon.
The reason for HIV contamination was a nail clipper which was not disinfected from previous use.
This lady was a blood donator and when she went to donate blood she came to the horrified discovery that she was HIV positive. She has made every possible test, but even though her blood parameters were in the optimal range, a sign of high viral load still existed.
This came to her as an unpleasant surprise because she was sure that she could have not gotten the virus through drug abuse or sex.
She was questioning herself form where she could have gotten it and then it occurred to her, the nail salon, that was the only place where she shared manicure tools. The same woman had shared the manicure tools at another nail salon with her cousin, who also later on discovered that she had the virus.
Due to this unusual occurrence hers and her cousin’s blood samples were tested, the results showed that their viral genetic material matched. This was an actual proof that the infection was transmitted through that nail clipper.
Even though there are unusual cases of HIV transmission like in the case of this Brazilian woman, things still remain the same about the ways of HIV transmission.
Nail clippers are not on the list of CDC on HIV- transmitting mechanisms. Medical experts still maintain that HIV virus cannot be transmitted with casual contact, like for instance drinking from the same glass or sharing forks, spoons and plates.
They have been aware of this unusual case, but still claim that there is no need for worry and because of that it is not put on the list. People do not need to worry about having contact with HIV infected people.
Yet, cases like this need to be carefully re-examined so that things start to change for better.
